Kathy Simon Abels, Ph.D.
President/Executive Director

Dr. Kathy Simon Abels began her career in philanthropy in 2003 when she and her family launched the “Ronald M. Simon Family Foundation” with an endowment from her father, successful California businessman, Ronald Simon. The original Foundation initiated the “Simon Scholars Program”, which focused on granting high school financial support and college scholarships to deserving students who have experienced economic hardship and difficult life circumstances. She continues to serve on the Board of Directors of this now nationally-focused organization which has recently been renamed “Simon Foundation for Education and Housing”. In 2010, Dr. Abels independently established the new “Simon Family Foundation”, which is based in San Clemente, California and focuses on operating a large Simon Scholars Program and making grants in the Southern California area. She currently serves as President and Executive Director.

Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Abels graduated Summa Cum Laude from Occidental College in Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles, and served clients in her private practice for nearly two decades while raising her three children.

Utilizing her background in psychology, Dr. Abels was instrumental in conceptualizing the Simon Scholars Program, an intensive, mentoring college-prep support initiative that aims to help high school students overcome financial adversity and life obstacles through mentoring, life skills training, academic support and financial assistance for college. Dr. Abels was honored by the NAACP in 2007 for her contribution to the Atlanta community. In addition, Dr. Abels and her staff received recognition in 2009 by being named the National Scholarship Providers Association’s “Independent Scholarship Provider of the Year” for its work with the Simon Scholars. The Simon Scholars Program has recently launched a national collaborative partnership with General Colin and Alma Powell’s Foundation, America’s Promise Alliance.
