Kathy Abels PhD
Born and raised in Southern California, Dr. Abels graduated Summa Cum Laude from Occidental College in Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles, and served clients in her private practice for nearly two decades while raising her three children.
Utilizing her background in psychology, Dr. Abels was instrumental in conceptualizing the Simon Scholars Program, an intensive, mentoring college-prep support initiative that aims to help high school students overcome financial adversity and life obstacles through mentoring, life skills training, academic support and financial assistance for college. Dr. Abels was honored by the NAACP in 2007 for her contribution to the Atlanta community. In addition, Dr. Abels and her staff received recognition in 2009 by being named the National Scholarship Providers Association’s “Independent Scholarship Provider of the Year” for its work with the Simon Scholars.
